Angelo Schwarz

Angelo Schwarz was born in Turin in 1944. Self-taught, he has worked as a journalist since 1968. As for photography, he has been editor, thereafter becoming Chief Editor, of the magazine “Popular Photography Italiana”(later known as “Il Diaframma Fotografia Italiana”) since the beginning of the seventies. Author of fundamental works on the history of photojournalism, the art of photographing mountains, and on the uses, roles and functions of photography in the First World War, in 1980 he founded and became director of “Rivista di storia e critica della fotografia.” For more than a quarter of a century, Schwarz was a full professor of Photographic History and Technique at the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Venezia and the Accademia Albertina delle Belle Arti di Torino, and he was also Chargé de cours of the History of Photography at the Université de Vincennes à Saint-Denis – Paris VIII and at the Université de Picardie. In November 2011, he retired from his role as full professor and was, at the same time, appointed Professor Emeritus of Photojournalism by the Accademia Albertina delle Belle Arti di Torino. In March 2012 he founded the Istituto di scienze delle immagini, an independent non- profit research institute.
