Paolo Patelli was born in Istria in 1934. He graduated from the University of Padua, he taught painting at New York University, the Accademia Belle Arti di Venezia, and was a lecturer at Sheffield, Norwich, Atlanta and MIT. He has had 75 solo exhibitions in Milan, Venice, Dusseldorf, Vienna, Verona, Genoa, Rome, Geneva, Lausanne, Edinburgh, Padova, Udine, Livorno, Karlsruhe, etc. and has participated in a number of European fairs including seven occasions a piece at Basel and the FIAC in Paris, six times at the Cologne Trade Fair, and twelve in Bologna, as well as Madrid, Stockholm, Berlin, Zurich, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brussels, Milan, Turin, and Florence. His works can be found in museums in Italy as well as overseas. From the outset, Patelli worked in the abstract field, more specifically that of analytical painting: in the seventies he was associated with so-called Pura Pittura (or Fare Pittura) group, and exhibited with its painters on many occasions, as in France with the Support- Surface painters.
